The SAAG Gallery is pleased to welcome Penny Buckley as its Visiting Artist for October. Penny’s colorful mixed-media work will be on display at the gallery October 1–31, and the public is invited to meet the artist at a special reception on Tuesday, October 6, from 4:30–6:30 p.m.

For Penny, art became a much-needed antidote to the suffering and hardships she witnessed while working with women experiencing homelessness in Tucson. What began as a quiet exploration of color, form, pattern and texture eventually grew into a full-time dedication to printmaking, collage and design.

A self-taught colorist, Penny begins by creating a series of hand-pulled prints, experimenting with the interaction of shape, color and pattern. She then uses those original papers to construct abstract collages mounted on wood. Her work combines strong geometric forms with the wonderfully imperfect textures of the printing process. Brilliant blues, turquoise, reds and yellows overlap, curve and intersect, inviting viewers to look beyond the overall design and discover the patterns and details within each layer.

Penny has lived in New York City, Boulder, Austin and San Francisco before settling in Tucson. Throughout her travels, museums and local galleries have been favorite destinations, and she is particularly drawn to Abstract Expressionism and Fauvism.

The SAAG Visiting Artist Program gives artists an opportunity to share their work with the Tucson community through a special month-long presentation at the SAAG Gallery.
