Exploring the possibilities that copper and glass offer to create vibrant art

Cecilia Ojeda (aka Noopoh)

Enameled Copper Bird with Fused Glass Design

Artist Statement:

Growing up in Chile, Cecilia developed a deep cultural connection to copper. It carries historical, and aesthetic significance for her, serving as a vital cultural bridge to her life in Arizona.

Copper’s intrinsic malleability allows it to be easily shaped; however, its ductile properties are lost when met with force. The metal becomes harder as it is hammered providing a fascinating metaphor for life. By adding glass powders (enamels) and subjecting it to scorching heat, the artist facilitates its transformation into a canvas of dazzling colors to enhance its natural beauty.

The fragility and clarity of glass combined with the strength and resilience of copper becomes symbolic. The transparency and rigidity of the glass create a dynamic tension with copper’s opacity and ductility producing an unexpected harmony.

After withstanding extreme heat both elements are ready to co-exist. Creating unique pieces is an ongoing, illuminating exploration. It is the artist’s sincere hope that the viewer enjoys them.
